How to choose your diamond?

For over 50 years, Bollwerk Jewelry has specialized in diamonds. As precious as it is elegant, this gem is found in all its forms in Bollwerk's bold creations. To help you choose the perfect diamond, here are a few tips to follow.

WEIGHT / CARAT

First, a diamond's weight is expressed in carats. One carat weighs 0.20 grams. Weight alone can never determine a diamond's value. Two diamonds of the same weight often have very different values; it all depends on their quality. Diamonds of high quality are available in all weights.

COLOR

Secondly, the best color for a diamond is the absence of color. Only a tiny minority are absolutely colorless, meaning completely white. The color of most diamonds ranges from colorless to yellow. To determine the exact color, diamonds are compared to a series of standard stones, which range from colorless D to yellowish Z. In addition, there are other hues known as "fancy" colors: intense yellow, orange, pink, blue, etc

PURITY / CLARITY

Thirdly, a diamond virtually free of crystallization irregularities or internal characteristics is of greater rarity and the highest quality. International standards have been established to classify diamonds according to their degree of purity.

Pure under the magnifying glass

A diamond is said to be pure under magnification when, observed by an experienced professional under 10x magnification, it is absolutely transparent and free from inclusions.

VVS1 – VVS2 (very very small inclusions)

Tiny inclusion(s) very difficult to see with a magnifying glass.

VS1 – VS2 (very small inclusions)

Very small inclusion(s) barely visible under a magnifying glass

SI1 – SI2 (small inclusions)

Small inclusion(s) easily visible under a 10x magnifying glass, invisible to the naked eye from the side of the crown.

PI – PIII Piqué

Inclusion(s) easily visible to the naked eye and slightly affectingthe brightness

SIZE / CUT

Fourth, the diamond is the hardest stone in the world. Nevertheless, many people confuse the size and weight of a diamond. Most diamonds are cut with 57 facets. The cut, polish, proportions, and symmetry of a diamond directly impact its lifespan and brilliance. If these cutting parameters are not met, the stone's beauty will be significantly diminished.
