Oyster Perpetual Submariner

THE REFERENCE DIVING WATCH

The Oyster Perpetual Submariner and the Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date, both archetypes of the diving watch, embody the historical links between Rolex and underwater exploration.

When it was launched in 1953, the Submariner was the first dive watch water-resistant to 100 meters. The Submariner Date, which features a date function, was launched in 1969. The water resistance of both models was later increased to 300 meters. Thanks to their reputation for robustness, they have also found their way onto land and have become favorite watches for a wide variety of activities and locations.

With their 41 mm Oyster case, dial featuring large luminescent hour markers and hands, unidirectional rotating bezel, and Oyster bracelet, the Submariner and Submariner Date are among the most recognizable watches ever made. A key element of their functionality is the graduated Cerachrom bezel disc made of high-tech ceramic, which contributes significantly to their distinctive identity. Its 60-minute graduation allows divers to precisely measure their dive time.

RELIABILITY, ROBUSTNESS AND FUNCTIONALITY

The Oyster case of the Submariner and Submariner Date is guaranteed water-resistant to 300 meters. The Triplock winding crown, equipped with a triple-sealing system, screws securely onto the case and ensures complete water resistance.

Designed to be both robust and comfortable, the Oyster bracelet is equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents any unintentional opening, as well as the Rolex Glidelock extension system, which allows its length to be easily adjusted without any tools.

The Submariner and Submariner Date are respectively equipped with the calibre 3230 and calibre 3235, self-winding movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Their architecture, manufacturing quality, and innovative features give them excellent performance in terms of precision and reliability. These calibres offer a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.

SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER CERTIFICATION

Like all Rolex watches, the Submariner and Submariner Date are certified as Superlative Chronometers. This designation attests that each watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories. Superlative Chronometer status is symbolized by a green seal and comes with a five-year international guarantee.

THE KEY TO THE DEPTHS

The Submariner was designed for underwater exploration and diving. Barely out of the Rolex workshops, it met with immediate success among the pioneers of professional diving, who were given the watch to test by the brand. One such example was Dimitri Rebikoff, a French engineer and underwater photographer.

In a document dating from 1953, Dimitri Rebikoff reports that the watch's performance during testing was remarkable: "We can confirm that this watch not only gave us complete satisfaction in particularly difficult and often fatal diving conditions for the equipment used, but that it also became an indispensable accessory for any scuba diving operation."
