Oyster Perpetual Air-King

SKY WITHIN REACH

The Oyster Perpetual Air-King celebrates the aeronautical heritage of the original Oyster. It pays tribute to those individuals who made the sky a territory of exploration and unprecedented achievements, a springboard to new ideals.

The Air-King is a testament to the special relationship between Rolex and aviation during its golden age in the 1930s. It pays tribute to the pilots of that era and the role of the Oyster in the history of flight. The 1930s saw a meteoric rise in aircraft performance, paving the way for long-haul flights. Several pilots set records wearing an Oyster. Others used a Rolex watch as an onboard chronometer, like Owen Cathcart-Jones and Ken Waller, who, in 1934, completed a record-breaking round trip between London, Great Britain, and Melbourne, Australia, in a twin-engine De Havilland Comet.

UNIQUE AESTHETIC

The current Air-King is distinguished by its black dial, which combines large hour numerals – 3, 6, and 9 – with a prominent minute track for optimal readability of sailing times. The iconic Rolex crown is displayed in yellow on the dial, while the seconds hand and the "Rolex" name are green, echoing the brand's signature color. Since the watch's launch in 1958, the "Air-King" inscription has appeared on the dial in a distinctive typeface that makes the model easily recognizable.

Since 2022, the 40 mm Air-King case has featured crown guards and straight case sides, similar to the case of most watches in the Professional category. The watch display has also been redesigned for a perfectly harmonious result, with the addition of a "0" before the numeral 5 at 1 o'clock on the minute track. Each five-minute interval is now marked by two numerals. Furthermore, the numerals 3, 6, and 9 are visible in the dark thanks to the Chromalight display's luminescent material, exclusive to Rolex.

RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE

An example of robustness and reliability, the Air-King's Oyster case is guaranteed water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters. Its case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, an alloy particularly resistant to corrosion.

The Air-King comes with a three-link Oyster bracelet in Oystersteel. This bracelet features an Oysterlock safety clasp, designed and patented by Rolex, which prevents accidental opening. It also includes the Easyling quick extension system, allowing for easy length adjustments of approximately 5 mm.

The Air-King is equipped with calibre 3230, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. It delivers high performance in terms of precision, power reserve, shock resistance, ease of use, and reliability. This movement features the exclusive blue Parachrom hairspring and the patented Chronergy escapement. The movement boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
