QUARTZ WATCH, HOW DOES IT WORK?
Quartz watches were the true revolution of the 1970s, and despite a strong passion for automatic watches, they are now the best-selling type of watch in the world. As the name suggests, a quartz watch is a watch that uses a quartz crystal. Quartz is a mineral with piezoelectric properties. Piezoelectricity is the ability of a material to become electrically polarized under the influence of a mechanical force. Instead, the material has the ability to vibrate and oscillate when subjected to an electrical voltage.
This is known as the inverse effect of piezoelectricity. This quartz vibration is not arbitrary; it consists of 32,768 vibrations per second. All the quartz crystals in a quartz watch vibrate at this frequency. The counter calculates the number of vibrations emitted by the quartz crystal, and when this number reaches 32,768, it triggers the second hand to advance by one second and the overall timekeeping mechanism. The regularity of these vibrations makes quartz watches extremely accurate.
