Everything you need to know about watch water resistance
When buying a watch, it's crucial to consider how you plan to use it, and that's where water resistance becomes a key factor. How can you tell if a watch is waterproof? Will it be able to withstand being submerged? And if so, to what depth? In this article, we'll answer all your questions about watch water resistance, helping you choose a model suitable for water sports, boating, and underwater activities.
Where is the water resistance level of a watch indicated?
Water resistance is usually indicated on the back of the watch. This information may also be found on the dial or the case. To determine if your watch is water-resistant, you can also check the crystal, the visible case back, the pushers, and the crown. Generally, you won't find any information on the strap.
It's important to know that there are several ways to indicate the water resistance level of a watch:
- BAR ;
- ATM;
- FT;
- Mr.
ATM
ATM means atmosphere and 1 atmosphere (1 ATM) is equivalent to 10 meters in water without movement (static pressure).
BAR
A BAR is just another way of defining an atmosphere.
FT
This refers to water resistance measured in feet in water without movement.
M
This is the water resistance measured in meters in water without movement.
Watches designed for underwater use, meaning waterproof watches for men or women, are generally rated at 3, 5, 10, 20, or 30 ATM/BAR. This corresponds to water resistance of 30, 50, 100, 200, and 300 meters, respectively. Testing is conducted in a laboratory following a specific procedure where the water pressure is gradually increased to reach the predetermined water resistance level. The tester then either approves or rejects the tested watch.
What should you know about the different levels of water resistance in a watch?
First, if your watch isn't engraved or doesn't show any water resistance markings, it means it's not waterproof. You must therefore handle it with care, as water could seriously damage it. Next, here's what you need to know about the different levels of water resistance for a watch.
Water Resist
Many watches are labeled "Water Resistant," meaning they are water-resistant, but only resistant to light splashes. In other words, these are not watches that can be worn underwater.
3 ATM/BAR
These watches can withstand a pressure of 3 ATM, which is equivalent to 30 meters underwater without movement (static pressure). However, a 3 ATM water resistance rating does not mean your watch is submersible to 30 meters. While 3 ATM indicates that it's a watch suitable for water, if you don't want to end up with condensation on the inside of your watch, we strongly advise removing it before swimming. Other models will be better suited to aquatic and underwater activities.
5 ATM/BAR
These watches can withstand a pressure of 5 ATM, which is equivalent to 50 meters underwater, without movement. The watch can be worn while swimming and is water-resistant enough for showering. However, if you intend to be in the water for an extended period, you should remove your watch as a precaution.
10 ATM/BAR
These watches are water-resistant to 10 ATM, which is equivalent to 100 meters underwater, without movement. A watch with a 10 ATM water resistance rating can be worn for swimming. These watches are designed for water sports. Do not use them for scuba diving, as these watches are not made to withstand the sudden pressure changes that can occur during these activities.
20 ATM/BAR
These watches are water-resistant to 20 ATM, which is equivalent to 200 meters underwater, without movement. It is perfectly possible to use one of these watches, rated as 20 ATM/BAR, for diving.
30 ATM/BAR
These watches are suitable for almost anything, as they can withstand high pressures and sudden pressure changes. They are built to last and are capable of withstanding water and functioning properly without being damaged or malfunctioning.
Where can I find a waterproof watch?
If you want to buy a quality waterproof watch, you should only go to a reputable watch and jewelry store. You should know that your watch will only be submersible according to the manufacturer's specifications and as long as it hasn't been opened. Once opened, for example to change the battery, this water resistance will no longer be guaranteed.
That's why you should always have your watch batteries changed at your trusted watchmaker and inform them that you want the watch to remain water-resistant. Only then will your watch receive the necessary maintenance and testing to guarantee that it will remain as water-resistant as the day you bought it.
